Chapter 11

Analytics & Security

Protecting and Measuring What Matters

Once your website and marketing are in motion, the next step is making sure two things are always in place: visibility and protection. You need to know what's happening on your site (analytics), and you need to make sure your business is protected against risks (security and compliance).

Think of it this way: your website is like a storefront. Analytics is the security camera and sales counter telling you who's coming in and what they're doing. Security is the lock on the door and the alarm system. Compliance is making sure the building itself meets codes so you don't face penalties.

Google Analytics 4 and Search Console

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is your window into how people use your site. It tracks visitors, traffic sources, and behaviors, letting you see what's working and what isn't.

Google Search Console is its partner tool. It shows how your site performs in Google search:

  • What keywords you're ranking for
  • Which pages get the most clicks
  • Any errors or indexing issues

Without these tools, you're guessing. With them, you have hard data that guides smart decisions.

Tag Manager Setup

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is like a control panel for all your tracking codes (Google Ads, Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insights, etc.). Instead of editing your site every time you want to add or update a tracking script, you drop them into Tag Manager.

This makes your site cleaner, faster, and easier to manage, especially as you scale.

Website Backups

Websites are living systems, and sometimes things break: updates fail, plugins conflict, or worse, a hacker gets in. That's why daily automated backups are essential.

If something goes wrong, you can restore your site in minutes instead of starting from scratch. Think of it as an insurance policy for your digital presence.

SSL, Firewall, and Malware Protection

An SSL certificate (that little padlock in your browser) encrypts your site traffic and signals trust. But security doesn't stop there. Adding tools like Wordfence, Sucuri, or Cloudflare adds layers of protection:

  • Firewalls block suspicious traffic
  • Malware scans catch and remove threats
  • Real-time monitoring keeps your site safe around the clock

Security isn't just about protecting yourself. It's about protecting your customers' data and trust.

PCI Compliance

If you're taking payments online, PCI compliance isn't optional. It's mandatory. This set of standards ensures your payment process is secure and protects customers from fraud.

Many payment processors (like Stripe, PayPal, and Square) handle most of this for you, but your website still needs to follow best practices: SSL encryption, secure hosting, and no storage of sensitive card data.

ADA/WCAG Accessibility Basics

Your website should be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. Following ADA/WCAG guidelines ensures:

  • Text is readable with screen readers
  • Images have alt text
  • Colors have enough contrast
  • Forms and buttons are easy to navigate

Not only does accessibility expand your audience, but in many industries, it reduces legal risks too. Accessibility is both good business and good compliance.
